Gustav Mahler: Songs of Wayfarer
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D major „Titan“
Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchester
conductor: Christoph Eschenbach
baiyton: Matthias Goerne
3 July 2010, Prague, Rudolfinum, Dvořák Hall
This concert presents Gustav Mahler as an important composer in two different genres: song and symphonic works.
Christoph Eschenbach serves as chief conductor and music director of the Orchestre de Paris as well as a guest conductor of orchestras and opera houses around the world.
With the Orchestre de Paris and invited vocal soloists in the Théâtre Châtelet he instigated the first complete performance of Wagner’s Ring in Paris. He electrified Prague most recently in December 2008 with his rendition of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. As a pianist Eschenbach collaborates regularly with baritone Matthias Goerne: during the past two years they have recorded together the three song cycles of Schubert, and for June 2009 they are preparing a Schubert recital in London’s Wigmore Hall as well as an appearance in the Schubertiade Festival in Austria.
Goerne ranks among the outstanding song interpreters and operatic singers, whom we can hear for example at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s Covent Garden, and the Salzburg Festival.
